Kevin Hart Calls Bruno Mars a Timeless Talent Born in The Wrong Decade

Comedian Kevin Hart had plenty of laughs to offer during his appearance on Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast on April 29, 2026, but when Bruno Mars came up, the jokes gave way to something closer to genuine admiration.

The two were doing a rapid-fire segment where Hart was expected to roast some of the biggest names in entertainment. He leaned into the spirit of it, assuring Cooper before they began that nobody would get their feelings hurt. But when Mars’ name came up, Hart set the roast aside entirely.

“Bruno missed his calling, man,” Hart said. “Bruno’s problem is with his parents. He’s pissed. ‘The f–k didn’t you guys have me in the ’60s and ’70s for? I should have been back there with those guys!’ He’s got everything.” Hart went on to say Mars was born in the wrong time, arguing he would have stood comfortably alongside James Brown and Prince during the disco and soul era that shaped popular music.

Cooper found it so funny she could barely catch her breath. But fans who watched the episode, now streaming on YouTube and podcast platforms, noted that Hart’s comments landed less like a roast and more like a tribute. Many agreed with him online, with several describing Mars as a generational talent whose retro funk and soul sensibility feels better suited to an earlier decade.

Not everyone sees it that way. Some critics have pointed out that in the actual 1970s, Mars might have struggled to stand out in a field already packed with the legends Hart was comparing him to. But those arguments tend to fade when Mars steps on a stage. His vocals, his movement, and the tightness of his live shows have consistently won over even skeptical audiences.

Mars, who turned 40 this year, is in the middle of a strong run. He currently draws 136.9 million monthly listeners on Spotify, placing him among the platform’s most-streamed artists. His first solo album since 2016’s 24K Magic, titled The Romantic, came out on February 27, 2026. The nine-track project leans into retro soul and disco-funk, and has been well received by fans who have followed him into his ongoing tour of the same name.

Hart’s comments have since spread widely, giving fresh momentum to an already familiar debate about where exactly Bruno Mars fits in music history.
