Moliy becomes first Ghanaian nominated for Best Afrobeats Artist at the AMAs

Ghanaian-American singer Moliy has made history at the 52nd American Music Awards, becoming the first Ghanaian artist to earn a nomination in the Best Afrobeats Artist category. The recognition places her alongside continental heavyweights Burna Boy, Rema, Wizkid and Tyla.

The 24-year-old rose to global prominence through her feature on Amaarae’s 2020 hit “Sad Girlz Luv Money.” The remix, which included Kali Uchis, landed on the Billboard Hot 100 and introduced Moliy to audiences well beyond West Africa. Her sound fuses Afrobeats, alte and contemporary pop with Ghanaian roots, carving out a distinct identity in an increasingly competitive global market.

The AMAs, one of the world’s largest fan-voted award shows, honour exceptional achievement across genres. For Moliy, the nomination is a personal milestone. For Ghana, it is a signal that its artists are ready to compete on the biggest stages. Her presence in this category reflects the expanding reach of African music and the role emerging talent plays in shaping its future.
